Looking Ahead to 2013

I know we still have a few more days of looking back over 2012, but I am ready to start looking ahead to 2013.  Most of my highly anticipated releases of 2013 are young adult books, but there are a handful of adult books that I can’t wait to read.

I am eager to get a turn with Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini, due out in January. This is the story of the friendship between Mary Todd Lincoln and her seamstress, a freed slave names Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley.

I am also very excited about the January release of Fables vol. 18: Cubs in Toyland, by Bill Willingham. This is one of my favorite graphic novel series and I highly recommend. If you are new to graphic novels, this is a fantastic place to start.

fables

February brings the next installment in the Flavia de Luce mystery series. I love the audiobook versions of these books and can’t wait to listen to Speaking from Among the Bones by Alan Bradley. Don’t know about Flavia? Start with The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

This summer you’ll find me on a patio somewhere with a copy of Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen. There is no cover art for this one yet, but based on her past books I am sure it will be lovely. These are my favorites:

July will also bring the final installment of the Spellman Files, The Last Word by Lisa Lutz. This is one of my favorite series and I am excited that there will be more and sad that is will be over. I am sure Lisa Lutz has something else spectacular and fun just waiting to be released. I hope. Please be true. Again, no cover art, but the rest of the books in the series got new art. I like it. Start at the beginning with The Spellman Files.

And last, but not least, I *hope* that I will get the final installment of the Locke & Key series, Omega by Joe Hill. There is no release date as of yet, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get my hands on it sometime in 2013. I loved this series so much that I am considering a reread while I wait. Check out the first one, Welcome to Lovecraft.

The End of a Series

The countdown has begun for the sixth, and final, book in Jean M. Auel’s epic Earth’s Children series. What started with Clan of the Cave Bear will conclude with Land of Painted Caves, due out on March 29, 2011.

I’ve never read the books but they have been bestsellers since the first one came out in 1980. Check out what staff thought of Auel’s books in the Reading Room.

News for Sherlock fans

No, not Sherlock Hemlock (although I love him too), but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s masterful detective, Sherlock Holmes. Orion Publishing Group has announced that Anthony Horowitz, author of the Alex Rider series and the BBC series “Midsomer Murders” and “Foyle’s War,”  has been chosen to bring Holmes back to literary life.

Horowitz has said he will try to “produce a first rate mystery for a modern audience while remaining absolutely true to the spirit of the original.”  According to the Vancouver Sun, this is the first time Doyle’s estate has approved a new Sherlock Holmes story. It is due to be published in England this September, and I for one will be on the lookout for it’s arrival in the US!

Dan Brown Won’t Let me Down

Back in 1999 while booktalking about new thrillers at a library conference, I held up Angels & Demons by Dan Brown showing that neat original cover that looked the same upside down. Think “ambigram.” I’d forgotten all about it until just recently when another librarian said to me, “I remember you, you held up Dan Brown’s book and said he was going to be the hot new thriller author way before The Da Vinci Code was published. angels-and-demons

Since then, over the years, I’ve picked other winners in my booktalks, but a couple real “dogs,” too.  Hopefully, my picks for the “hot” reading this summer will all be sizzlers!

roadside-crosses1

June: Roadside Crosses by Jeffrey Deaver – A standalone thriller about a serial killer who puts up roadside crosses with the intent to kill someone rather than as a memorial.

black-hillsJuly: Black Hills by Nora Roberts – A new romantic thriller about reunited childhood friends who must work together to solve a series of crimes threatening a wildlife refuge.

silent-hourAugust: The Silent Hour by Michael Koryta – The 4th book in the Lincoln Perry investigator series. Set in Cleveland, these just get better and better!

September: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown – Robert Langdon returns for his third adventure.

It’s been a long wait, but I know that Dan Brown won’t let me down.
