True confessions? I’m not actually at the library today! I’ve been at the American Library Association’s Midwinter meeting in Philadelphia! Why is that? Well, for the past year I’ve been reading, reading, reading fiction/nonfiction/poetry books as part of the Notable Books Council! It has been an amazing and challenging experience so far -and I’m guessing the discussion that we’ll be having to narrow the final list of eighty-plus titles to just twenty-five will be equally amazing and challenging. (I’ll let you know next week!) In the meantime, I’d like to suggest you check out books in The Reading Room that have been tagged with the descriptor: Award Winners!

Enjoy!

Brr! It’s chilly! (I’m going for ironic understatement -how’d I do?) I mean really, this cold weather is coming to us courtesy something called an “arctic vortex” so you know it can’t be very warm out, no? On the bright side, I can clearly imagine small-to-medium sized polar bears breezing by on the winds of an arctic vortex -and then it’s worth it, right there! Look! There goes another one! Let’s call that one Ernie! So what do you do when the temperature drops and going outside doesn’t have so much appeal? You read! (Inside of course! This isn’t spring or summer porch reading weather!) I’m pretty sure I saw everyone over the weekend -you guys were smart to think ahead and stock up!- but in case you’re looking for something new? Maybe you’d like to read one of these books recently added to The Reading Room:

Runaway Man by David Handler
Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini

Or you could read a book about summer and pretend it’s not so cold out? Then in summer when we’re all super hot -I’ll suggest some chilly books! Something to look forward to!

Until then, stay warm and cozy -and don’t forget the book!

It’s coming! One of my favorite things! The end of the year Top Ten of 2013 lists are coming next week! I love seeing what everyone has chosen as their favorite books of the year. Some of the books I’ve heard co-workers talking about but some I haven’t, plus sharing a book right after you’ve read it is different than putting it in a final, favorites list (I think)… And I know waiting is tough, so I thought maybe I’d share just a few “outside” lists to hold you over until our awesomely awesome lists come along!

New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2013
Kirkus: Best General Fiction Books of 2013
Library Journal’s Best Books 2013 Top Ten

And more from Library Journal!
Publishers Weekly: Staff Favorites of 2013
The Guardian

And don’t forget to take a peek at our Holiday Gift Guide 2013! (True, you missed the program -and the snacks- but you can still see all the wonderful titles suggested by RRPL staff members.) Now let’s start the countdown until next week… Seven days to go!

Is anyone else feeling all day/date/time confused? I’m still struggling with how dark it gets so early in the evening and then add in how late Thanksgiving is this year? Then these things are distracting me enough that I become confused about what day of the week it really is -not just what day it feels like in my own mind. Gah! It makes me want to hibernate! How about you? Of course, if I were actually able to hibernate -which honestly sounds delightful!- I would take a big stack of books with me! The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater
Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford
Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole
Fever by Mary Beth Keane
