Another week of gorgeous weather! Who doesn’t love the sunshine and cooler temperatures? Who?! It does make it a little more challenging to read though… Yes, you could head out to the porch -but it’ll get chilly without the sun, or you could sit in the yard, but it could get a little breezy in the wind. So as you might be reading less, we’re probably reading less too… It works out okay, right? Or you can consider this a friendly heads-up to slow down and savor the following:

Francona by Terry Francona
The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters

Enjoy the weather!

I fully enjoy 99% of everything that makes Halloween a fabulously fun holiday! And the missing 1%? It’s the scary part. I really and truly do *not* enjoy the scary movies (or even the ads for scary movies) or the haunted houses or creepy costumes. Lucky for me, it’s only 1% and my coping mechanism is reading to distraction -not so bad! Are also looking for some distracting books? How about one of these:

Benediction by Kent Haruf
Lock, Stock, and Over a Barrel by Melody Carlson
The Returned by Jason Mott
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
My One Square Inch of Alaska by Sharon Gwyn Short

Or check out the books we read and shared in our last genre discussion Happy Horror-ween! (And eat some fun-sized candy while your at it!) Enjoy!

It’s official! It’s Fall! *Now* I can feel happy about seeing all those fall-time treats without thinking it’s too soon -right? So bring on the crispy weather, tasty treats, and promise of Halloween fun! And in celebration of all this goodness -let’s start a new tradition…  I’m going to share some titles that have been recently added to The Reading Room by staff members and then I’m going to invite you (our faithful readers!) to share a book you’ve recently read and enjoyed! How about that!!

Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell
The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. by Adelle Waldman
The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra
Southern Cross the Dog by Bill Cheng

And you? What have *you* recently read and enjoyed!?

While I wait for the responses to roll on in, would you like to ponder the bigger picture? That’s lucky as isn’t just the first official week of Fall but it’s also the official Banned Books Week! Take a stroll through past years and read our thoughts on our freedom to read freely… This year I’m going to challenge myself to read “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie. A book I’ve been meaning to read for the longest time, so I’m seizing the moment…

It feels a little sad that there are no more summer reading baskets to share and that all that lovely fried food on a stick must return to my dreams for another year… But we shall get through these tough times together, right?! For my part, I think I’ll take solace in knowing that I can share five new titles recently added to The Reading Room by your very own Rocky River Public Library Reference staff members! Doesn’t that give you comfort too? In that case, here they come:

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
The Execution of Noa P Singleton by Elizabeth L. Silver
The Healer by Antti Tuomainen
Joyland by Stephen King
Heirs and Graces by Rhys Bowen

But of course you can stop in, call, or use the online Reader’s Request form, if you’d like more titles to try! Enjoy!

It’s Monday! And we’re back to regular business! No more summer reading for anyone now….  All the prizes have been awarded, all the snacks have been consumed, and the last of the entry slips are being used for scrap paper. Sigh. Isn’t that sad? Maybe one of these books that have newly added to The Reading Room will help distract you from those blue feelings!

The Old Turk’s Load by Gregory Gibson
Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberley McCreight
NW: a novel by Zadie Smith
The Last Summer of the Camperdowns by Elizabeth Kelly
