If you are looking for a mixture of historical fiction and mystery, and are not squeamish with a few medical procedures, Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati is a good choice for your reading pleasure. The story takes place in the 1890’s in Manhattan and centers around cousins Dr. Sophie Savard and Dr. Anna Savard who are fighting to help protect the less fortunate, their patients, in New York.

In the novel, Manhattan has been struck with a serial killer with a bizarre MO: a woman is found dead, with baffling wounds. The Drs. Savard come to discover this woman was recently pregnant, though the baby is nowhere to be seen. This discovery yields two important questions for the doctors: who would do this, and where is the baby?

Through a series of twists and turns, these answers are found, though not before the doctors are taken on a complex journey through late nineteenth century Manhattan, the power structures in place for women and racial minorities at the time, and the depravity of the criminal mind.
