Have you ever wondered why cookies are such a big part of our Christmas celebrations? The original Christmas cookie may have been gingerbread. In Europe in the 1500s, the baking of gingerbread was only allowed by guildsman–professional bakers. But at Christmas time, these rules were relaxed and the common people were allowed to bake gingerbread in their homes for a special treat. We’re not restricted to once a year, but this is the time to make those delicious recipes that have been in the family for years, and to try new recipes and start new traditions. We have plenty of books to help!
