Tuesday at the Movies

Iimagest’s the lovely month of May, the beginning of the downtime for movie watching as the weather gets nicer. Still, there’s a lot of great stuff coming out this week that you may want to make time for!

WEEKLY MOVIE REVIEW: Last night we showed The Iran Job at the Indie Int’l Film Festival. A documentary from Film Movement, it’s about an American basketball player, Kevin Sheppard, who was recruited to play for an Iranian basketball team. He had some qualms about going to Iran considering all the anti-Iran hype in the news at the time, but decided that he needed to take the leap. Once there, he befriended three women and, in learning about their lives, expanded his perspective. The movie was easy to watch; Sheppard is a personable, funny person and he approached his new job with an open heart and mind. The intervening basketball video of the team as it made its way into the playoffs lightened up the film as well. I could have done without the occasional shots of Presidents Bush and Ahmadinejad and their saber rattling, which didn’t really add any depth and took away from the time I would have rather spent with the people in the film. It’s now available to check out here at the library if you’re interested.
