Today’s my mom’s 88th birthday; she’s had some health setbacks recently but she’s still smart and opinionated as ever! When I was about 11 or 12 I became my mother’s movie companion when the National Theater opened up in my suburban hometown. I hadn’t gone to too many movies in my young life and all of a sudden my mom was taking me to some pretty eye opening films. Those that I remember seeing are The Godfather, Lady Sings the Blues and The Garden of the Finzi Continis – all movies featuring some pretty heavy material. My mom and I would talk about them (though I’m sure much of it passed way over my head) and I felt like I was such the adult! Here’s to you mom, and the intellectual openness and curiosity that you passed onto me – and the respect you gave to my child’s mind!
