movieThis week basketball nirvana begins – days and nights of endless college hoops for those so inclined. If you want to dig a little deeper into the art, business, culture and athleticism of b-ball, you may want to check out the following documentaries.

For starters, there’s the great Hoop Dreams, a look at two inner-city high school basketball hoop players’ lives as they chase their dreams of playing in the NBA. Almost 10 years old, it’s still relevant and fascinating.

heartThe six turbulent seasons of the Roosevelt Roughriders girl’s basketball team is captured in The Heart of the Game and The Other Dream Team depicts the extraordinary story of the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team, whose athletes became symbols of Lithuania’s independence movement.

Magic & Bird: a Courtship of Rivals, captures the friendship, talent and grace of two great stars and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s On the Shoulders of Giants is about the Harlem Rens, an all-black basketball team that played during the Harlem Renaissance.

Onto this week’s new DVD releases:
