movieAnother Oscar ceremony has come and gone – always a little fun (dresses and movie stars!), a bit boring (long winded speeches and technical awards) and even sometimes controversial (this year’s host will not be invited back I should think). Anyway, this year’s crop of nominees was particularly good and varied and I’m looking forward to spending the next few months watching some great films as they’re released on DVD…Some of which are here this week:

The Master – Blu-Ray and DVD: Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film is a veiled look at the founding of Scientology. Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for best actor.
Chasing Mavericks – Blu-Ray and DVD: Gerard Butler stars as a surfer in this film about following your dreams.
The Loneliest Planet: Fiances Alex and Nica go backpacking in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, where their peaceful adventure takes a dark turn. Gael Garcia Bernal stars. Nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
Silent Souls: a Russian film about a man who journies with a companion to cremate the dead body of his former beloved wife.
Nova Science How Smart Can We Get?: a NOVA PBS special.
How to Survive a Plague: nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary, this film is about the activists who helped turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition.
Stolen Seas: a documentary about the Somali pirates.

Happy Watching!
