I haven't read this book, because for personal reasons I stay away from Grandin's books. Not that I hate her or anything; it's something different. I too have Asperger's, and until two years ago have spent my life with animals (being made more human by them) in a very different way than I think Grandin has. I have never been able to have the kinds of relationships I seek with any beings other than animals. And as regards what they can teach us, I learned more about courage and loyalty and patience and acceptance than I ever learned from any human being.

"The Arrival" by Sean Tan is amazing.
No words. None.
But the illustrations are SO well done that I cried while reading it. It's about displacement and feeling lost where you are. Immigration, foreign lands etc. Really amazing stuff, you should check it out!

I love to get lost in a novel, but I write short stories myself. The artfulness of short story writing is much different, and I really love being able to pick them apart...
Give a look into Melbournian (Australian) Carmel Bird; she's written some truly amazing stuff, "Automatic Teller" in particular.

Sandra Bullock would have been great, i think, but she's probably too old now. Katherine Heigl is a great actress, so maybe she can pull it off. I really hope so.
I think Reese Witherspoon would have been an even worse choice than Katherine Heigl.

From those covers The Bone Chamber would win because it is the most interesting, followed by Impact because it has the brightest colours and The First Rule comes last because the author's name is bigger than the title and the cover is pretty plain looking.
I'm really glad there isn't an idol for books. Good writing wouldn't stand a chance.

I went to check out this book, but all five copies were already out, so I'm on hold. Thanks for sharing. I hope other readers send along their favorite opening lines, too.

one of my recent favourites (though there are many!):

"Elspeth died while Robert was standing in front of a vending machine watching tea shoot into a small plastic cup"
(from Her Fearful Symmetry, by Audrey Niffenegger)

One Hundred Years of Solitude was one of my favourite books and it was that first sentence that grabbed my attention fully.
Thanks for sharing some interesting beginnings.

Wasn't it exceptional! It was hard to talk about it in a couple of words. I've been meaning to read more by Zusak. Have you read anything else by him? Chris
