What a challenge! I read and listened to so many books this year that I could make a Top 20 list. So, I am going to cheat a tiny bit and include entire series in my top ten list.  In no particular order I give you my 21 favorites of 2009.

• Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. This sequel to The Hunger Games is even better than the first book.

• Gone and Hunger by Michael Grant. What happens when everyone over the age of 15 disappears? Find out in this new series that is modern-day Lord of the Flies with a supernatural twist. I can’t wait for book three in 2010.

City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. Fans of Harry Potter and Twilight will love this action packed series about demon hunters. It has everything-villans, heroes, romance, vampires, magic, and some incredible battles!

Lightning Thief,  Sea of Monsters, Titan’s Curse, Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. I listened to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on audiobook. Let me tell you, I had a lot of “driveway moments” with these books! The Greek gods are alive and well in modern-day New York and it is up to Percy, a half-blood to save Olympus from the Titans. Read these now before the movie comes out in February 2010.

So far I have mentioned 4 incredible young adult series, but this post is getting quite long, so I think I will wrap it up. Before I go I absolutely have to tell you that I also loved Wake and Fade from The Dream Catcher series by Lisa McMann, The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter,  The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockheart, and The Immortals Series by Alyson Noel. Finally, in the adult fiction category(I do read some of that too!), I read and loved  Twenties Girl by Sophia Kinsella, and Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. Phew! That’s a lot of books. For more details see the Reading Room or me!

Happy Birthday Melvil Dewey!

December 10 is the birthday of the creator of the Dewey Decimal System, the book classification system that is used in most libraries, Melvil Dewey. Born in 1851, he became a librarian at Amhert College in 1874 and published his Dewey Decimal System in 1876. He helped to establish the American Library Association in 1876 and the first professional library school at Columbia University in 1887. He was even one of the original founders and editors of the Library Journal. He died on Dec. 26, 1931. He was truly a librarian’s librarian and one that I “DEWEY” love!                             ~Donna

Check out the Dewey Rap! Beware…it is addicting….

Thank you Melvil Dewey! Happy Reading!

Thick, glossy, information-rich magazines December 1, 2009

I love magazines! They’re my reading-on-the-go. Rather than waste time commuting, waiting in line or waiting period, I read magazines to keep informed and current. I always learn something new, enhance what I already know, or at the very least, find some entertainment. Most months I check out the New Yorker, Real Simple, Vogue, Bazaar, Prevention, Martha Stewart, Mac World, and if I’m getting my hair cut, Hairstyle. However, I do have my must-reads.

My absolute favorite is Vanity Fair because of the great writing that fill its pages. Contributing editors like James Wolcott, Lisa Robinson and Michael Wolff always have something interesting to say. The recent story by Bruce Handy “Don and Betty’s Paradise Lost” reveals the inner workings of my favorite television show, Mad Men, but more importantly, profiles the genius behind it, writer Matthew Weiner, and sheds light on his creative process. And although I read just one Michael Jackson story after his death, I have a feeling I read the best: “The Boy Who Would Be King” written by Lisa Robinson, who interviewed and spent time with him for the last twenty-one years. Aside from the feature stories, I like the “Fanfair” section, subtitled  “30 Days in the Life of the Culture” because it brings me up-to-date on books, music, movies, tech, fashion, beauty and travel.

Also, I appreciate what the financial writers put forth in Smart Money. With the rules changing minute-by-minute, they help me make sense of it all.

In my effort to learn both sides of the story, I rely on NewsWeek. Might be its thoughtful writing, its new format, or its awesome editor, Jon Meacham, that keeps me coming back.

And I always read Town&Country for my fantasy life. I just finished flipping through December’s “200+ Amazing Gifts” and I covet every one of them. However, I would forego them all to spend a single afternoon in the Biku tea lounge, an Indonesian restaurant/tearoom/bookshop/antique store  (page 107).
